Introduction
The success of an event is often judged by the public and the media involved. To manage an event well, the organizers would need to be aware of the problems that they will face. I have chosen to attend La Guardia Flamenca for my reflection report. Through this field trip, it provided me with a first hand account as a spectator and also to reflect on the program and management of this event.
La Guardia Flamenca (LGF) is an entertaining parade of the pink Belgium marching girls in short skirts who entrance with dance and song. LGF has only existed since 2005, but has already had performances in Singapore, France, Netherlands, Austria, etc, and of course, Belgium.
In this report, I will be covering on the background of the organizer, the role of events to the organizer, the stakeholders, target market and marketing strategies employed. I will also be covering on the potential of this event and also how STB could promote this event.
Background of the organizer
The organizer for LGF is the National Arts Council (NAC). It was set up in September 1991 for the development of the arts in Singapore. It seeks to nurture the arts and make it an integral part of people’s lives in Singapore. It also aims to build a vibrant arts sector by creating a conducive environment with the necessary resources and capabilities, to excel and achieve sustainability in the long term.
Role of events to the organizer and Singapore
Through organizing this event, it will bring benefits to both the organizer and to Singapore as a whole. By bringing in this event to Singapore, it helps to promote arts culture to the youngsters as well as to the older folks. This broadens people’s cultural horizon, exposing them to new people and ideas during interaction. It also generates cultural and social awareness. There will also be media interest when an event is held and this will help to publicize the profile of the organizer and Singapore. As people are getting better educated and more sophisticated, the organizer will then have to conduct more studies and research to support the profession and industry which in turn upgrade themselves.
Furthermore, it will help to boost Singapore’s profile as a country of social cohesion when people get together during events. It will also assist to promote investment when investors are attracted to the liveliness of events. This expands the business opportunities in Singapore as events can provide us with a strong platform to showcase our expertise to host potential investors. Besides, it generates tourism revenue when tourists fly over to Singapore to watch the event. The tourists may get interested to further watch the performance and may even extend their stay in Singapore. Many a times, litters can be seen after hosting an event. Singapore can also promote environmental awareness to the public. Stakeholders and target market
The success of an event depends partially on the validity of the assumptions made by the various stakeholders. The stakeholders will include the sponsors and partners. They are the official TV stations; arts central and the official online media; yahoo! Singapore. Adding on, it also includes the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Clark Quay and Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
The target market identified would be the tourists, arts-lovers and families. During my visit there, I noticed that there were many teenagers as well doing similar projects as us. There were also many photographers snapping pictures during the performance. Marketing strategies employed
Marketing strategies consists of the 8 ‘P’s; product, place, partnerships, promotion, programming, people, price, packaging and distribution.
The event itself will be the product. The success of an event will depend largely on the entertainment level it brings to its viewers. For LGF, it was held at Clark Quay. Tourists who are not familiar with Singapore can explore the sitemap of Singapore on the Internet to find out the exact location of where this event is held. An event is also a joint marketing effort between the organizer, sponsors and the partners. The organizer promotes this event through the use of brochures and pamphlets to create greater awareness to the public. In order to allow visitors to know the exact timings and locations of LGF, the organizer also include a program schedule in the brochure for the benefit of interested parties. Besides, the homepage of LGF also has a calendar for viewers to assess. This will encourage “fans” of LGF to fly over to Singapore to watch the performance. I encountered a little girl with her family from Philippines during the event. The girl was able to dance to the beat of the music with the performers. They came to Singapore specially to catch this performance. Besides, it also makes use of volunteers to help out. Student volunteers can increase community participations and a sense of cohesion. Mineral water and brochures were given out at the end of the performance.
Rating the organization of the event
Basically, I feel that LGF is fabulous. I would give the organization of LGF 80 marks out of 100. The bright lightings and loud music simply livened up Boat Quay. There were also many people that Saturday night, but the area at Boat Quay was limited to put seats. Many of the spectators were standing. Some were even blocking the view of the person behind them. I feel that the organizer should get more volunteers to help control the crowd. There were mineral water distributed after the event by the student volunteers.
Potential of the event to meet tourist demand
Although this event is only 30 minutes, it really helps to lighten up the atmosphere at Clark Quay with their loud banging drums and “sound-making” shoes. The uniqueness of LGF lies in how the performers try to blend both the discipline and organization of the marching bands in together. The performance is able to convey a musical and cultural tradition. Besides, it engages audiences with movements of happiness, love and even anger. The location at Clark Quay also serves as a potential to attract tourists. As Clark Quay is surrounded with pubs and clubs, it is common to see tourists around.
How value of event could be raised to be align with the tourism mission of Singapore
STB’s mission aims to develop & champion tourism, so as to build the sector into a key driver of economic growth for Singapore. I think that STB can host this event at a larger scale in the future. At a larger scale, it would be able to attract more quality tourists. Besides, it will also help to create positive image of Singapore that we have the potential and is able to host large events. STB can also spread the demand of this event through broader marketing channels. Instead of highlighting this event on brochures and pamphlets, the organizer can market it on the Internet and media stations too. This will allow more people to be aware of such an event. STB can also use this event as a catalyst to stimulate business and trade into Singapore.
